Most students who struggle with word problems can do the arithmetic. The problem is seeing what the question is actually asking. A bar model turns the words into a picture, and once the picture is there, the right operation shows itself. Work through the four problems below and watch it happen.

Research on Singapore students found that the bar model reduced errors caused by misreading word problems. Students who drew accurate diagrams chose the correct operation significantly more often than students who solved from text alone, regardless of language ability.

Operation: MultiplyThe bar model method, also called the Model Method, is a visual problem-solving approach used in Singapore primary school mathematics. Students draw rectangular bars to represent known and unknown quantities in a word problem. Once the picture is complete, the operation needed (add, subtract, multiply, or divide) becomes clear from the structure of the diagram. The Ministry of Education introduced it in the 1980s and it remains a core part of the syllabus from P2 to P6.
Bar models are introduced in P2 and used through to P6. P2 and P3 focus on Part-Whole models for addition and subtraction. P3 and P4 introduce Comparison models. P4 to P6 extend to Ratio, Fraction, Percentage, and Before-After models built on the same bar structure. The model method appears in PSLE Math examinations.
Word problems require two skills: understanding the structure of the problem (what is known, what is unknown, how the quantities relate), and then calculating the answer. Many students who struggle with word problems have no difficulty with arithmetic. They fail at the first step because they cannot identify which operation to use from words alone, without a visual structure. The bar model fixes this by making the problem structure visible before any number work begins.
Yes. A bar model and a tape diagram are the same approach with different names. "Bar model" is the term used in Singapore and parts of Asia. "Tape diagram" is used in the United States Common Core curriculum. Both involve horizontal rectangular bars to show how quantities in a word problem relate to each other.
Singapore primary math uses three core bar model types: Part-Whole models (addition and subtraction, where you know either the parts or the whole), Comparison models (finding how much more or less one quantity is than another), and Repetition models (multiplication and division, where one quantity is a multiple of another). More advanced models for fractions, ratios, and before-after scenarios are taught in P5 and P6, but all build on the same three foundations.
