Is this a fit for your child?
A good fit if
- Your child is in P3 or P4 and lights up at a good challenge, or you’d like them to.
- School math comes easily and they’re ready for a real stretch.
- Or they’d enjoy a safe-to-be-wrong space to try ideas aloud. I built this for both kinds of learners.
Not built for you if
- You want exam-paper drilling or a promise about grades. I don’t make grade promises; I train thinking.
- You want this term’s school topics retaught. That is what my regular classes are for. This workshop works on the thinking underneath them.
Why this matters at P3 and P4
In 2021 the Ministry of Education rewrote the primary maths syllabus and made problem solving its central focus. MOE’s own words: the central focus is “the development of mathematical problem-solving competency”, and the problems it means include “complex and non-routine tasks that requires deeper insights, logical reasoning and creative thinking”.
P4 is where a child feels that. Fractions stop sharing a denominator, decimals arrive from scratch, and word problems stop yielding to one remembered step. A child who sailed through P3 on procedure often meets their first real wall here.
PSLE asks for the same thinking at the end of the road. Its stated objective is to “reason mathematically; analyse information and make inferences; select appropriate strategies to solve problems”. That is a habit, and habits are built years earlier. P3 and P4 is when there is still room to build it.
What actually changed in the 2021 syllabus
- Problem solving moved to the centre. MOE’s framework puts problem-solving competency at the heart of the curriculum, supported by concepts, skills, processes, metacognition and attitudes. Heuristics are named as the tool: “General problem-solving strategies, e.g. Pólya’s 4 steps to problem solving and the use of heuristics, are important in helping one tackle non-routine tasks systematically and effectively.” (MOE, 2021 Primary Mathematics Syllabus, page 13)
- Assessment followed. MOE lists among its assessment objectives students’ “ability to develop strategies to solve non-routine problems”. (Same document, page 25)
- P4 now carries more than it used to. Pie Charts and Nets moved down from P6, decimals begin, and fractions with unlike denominators arrive. I wrote about that year in detail: the challenges of Primary 4.
- The 2026 cohort is the first to sit PSLE entirely under the revised syllabus. More on what changed: key changes after the 2021 update.
- A fair word on difficulty. The paper is not built to defeat children. MOE designs it to be accessible to most students, and the genuinely demanding portion is a limited share of the marks. What changed is what those marks reward. My longer view: why PSLE maths papers feel harder.
What happens in each session?
Two sessions of 2.5 hours each, built around five thinking areas: Pattern & Number Sense, Logical Thinking, Visual Problem Solving, Spatial Thinking and Challenging Word Problems. Each session is self-contained. Attend one or both; the capstone problem sets differ, so nothing repeats.
Session 1 · Numbers & Logic
- Pattern & Number Sense. We start with bite-sized number challenges, then learn to spot, extend and explain number patterns using the Pattern heuristic. I always ask why before how: why does this pattern hold?
- Logical Thinking. Deduction challenges solved with Make a List and Supposition, and Guess and Check sharpened from random guessing into systematic checking.
- Capstone: Challenging Word Problems. A number-pattern and logical-deduction problem set that pulls both skills together, including Work Backwards problems.
Session 2 · Visual & Spatial
- Visual Problem Solving. Model drawing: turning a wordy problem into a bar model your child can actually see and reason about, with the Unit Method for sharing and comparing quantities.
- Spatial Thinking. Hands-on work with manipulatives following the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) progression: build it, draw it, then solve it on paper.
- Capstone: Challenging Word Problems. A model-drawing and visualisation problem set, different from Session 1’s, so children attending both get all-new challenges.

- Each session stands alone; one is a complete experience.

Questions parents ask me
Will this help with PSLE?
Yes, though not by drilling papers. PSLE asks a child to reason, make inferences and choose a strategy. Those are habits, and habits start early. What your child builds at P3 and P4 is the same thinking the exam looks for later, and it keeps working long after PSLE is done. I won’t promise you a grade. Nobody honestly can.
Is my child ready for this?
There’s no entry test. Every group starts from bite-sized challenges, so each child collects early wins before the difficulty steps up. The group is a safe-to-be-wrong environment: ideas are tried aloud, and wrong turns are part of the training.
Online or in person: which should we pick?
It’s the same live session either way, and you choose for each session. In person means joining the roundtable at my Bukit Timah centre; online means joining the same session from home. Pick what fits your week.
What if the dates don’t fit us?
You can still sign up. Everyone who signs up gets the recording of the session, plus the follow-up resources and videos I send afterwards, and there’s no time limit on any of it. So a clashing date is no longer a reason to miss the material. Dates aren’t fixed yet either, so registering interest commits you to nothing: when dates open I’ll share every detail over WhatsApp before any payment.
Do the two sessions repeat content?
No. Session 1 covers numbers and logic; Session 2 covers visual and spatial thinking. Both finish with Challenging Word Problems, but the problem sets are different, so attending both means all-new problems each time.
